La caricatura política como discurso multimodal: una propuesta de abordaje

Abstract

This article presents the results of a corpus-based analysis of political cartoons published on- line in the US after 9/11. Political humor is socially produced, distributed and consumed; consequently, extratextual elements are needed to interpret it. Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2011) theoretical frame of multimodal discourse is used. The intersection and interdependence of different communication modes are analyzed in context, with an emphasis on the co-occurrence and interaction of different semiotic systems in meaning production. The construction of an image of the immigrant through iconic and verbal components is analyzed in the selected cartoon, as well as the manner in which its components relate to constitute a homogeneous text.

The analysis contributes to the understanding of the social representations of immigrants in the US in the context of the war on terrorism.
