Abstract

Amorphous metal distribution transformers (AMDT) are the most energy efficient transformers on the market. Their efficiency is based on reducing core losses, a 70% compared with traditional

transformers. This technology is being adopted in a growing and steadily manner since 1980, with production plants not only in highly developed countries like the United States, Japan, China and from the European Union but also in developing countries like India (with the largest number of AMDT in the world) and more recently, in Brazil.

Despite the proven benefits, in both energy and environmental level, electricity distribution companies worldwide still not employ AMDT on a massive scale. With regard to our country, although several research groups have advanced in the study of these materials, policies that promote market development for their implementation are still to be generated, such as, promotion of suppliers, consumer awareness and enactment of relevant legislation.

This paper presents a brief description of AMDT, exposing their advantages. We analyze the main reasons that limit their application in order to propose some actions to the incorporation  of this technology, concerning the dissemination of knowledge and a legal framework that encourages the production of AMDT in local businesses, to be included in energy-saving existing policies.
